“Our conference in 2008 was an exciting continuation of past CSC conference on youth aggression,” explained Will Sanchez, Executive Director of Dutchess County Youth Bureau and conference chairperson. In 2007, local youth were introduced to Rachel’s Challenge, an organization founded in memory of Rachel Scott, an inspiring student who was killed in the Columbine High School massacre. “In 2008, we were able to hear from students and school district representatives from the Arlington, Red Hook, and Wappinger school districts regarding their experiences with this initiative,” added Sanchez.
According to County Executive William Steinhaus, “This annual conference brings young people from across the county together to discuss issues that directly impact their lives.”
"Incidents of violence against youth whether from bullying or other aggressive behavior can have tragic consequences,” added Jacki Brownstein, Executive Director of Mental Health America in Dutchess County. “In addressing this issue,” she stated, “we hope to inspire youth and help them to make a difference.”
The legacy of Columbine teen, Rachel Scott, which was the topic in 2007 and 2008 continues to live on. There are plans for the Dutchess County Youth Bureau, in partnership with the Children's Services Council, to offer a conference bringing together the 11 plus schools that have initiated local Rachel's Challenge initiatives. More information will be forthcoming.
